WHY STEEL?

For this 3/4" to 1" thick slate roof that weighed  1-ton per square, steel frames were the best answer.

Experience in the three basic types of steel framed structures has enabled Alford Steel Homebuilders to provide a product that we consider to be far superior to any wood structure in the market today. If a wood builder matches the features that our steel framing offers their price of construction will definitely increase. Additionally, there may be many features that wood construction can not match. A few are noted below.
wStrength-to-weight ratio. A steel member that provides the same structural value as wood will weigh much less. Most steel framed homes weigh half of what a wood structures weighs.
wNo Termites or Rotting. To our knowledge steel-eating termites do not exist.
wFire resistant. Many residential fires start on the interior walls or attics, from electrical shorts that cause arcs that ignite wood members. Steel members are noncombustible and therefore much safer.
wInsurance benefits. Home Owners Insurance cost less than wood construction homes.
wEnvironment. Residential steel members are made mostly from recycled steel.

.

More and more homes are being built with steel. Steel sold for residential use in the United States has doubled each of the last two years and will continue to grow until it is the material of choice for residential use. Labor experience in steel framing lags the demand for steel framed homes. Traditional wood framers refuse to accept the new kid on the block.
